The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is a time for OSSTF/FEESO and its members to remember the tragedy of the Montreal Massacre and commemorate the lives of the 14 women who were brutally murdered on December 6, 1989. Established by Canada's Parliament in 1991, this commemorative date is also an opportunity for women and men to make a commitment for change to end violence against women and girls in our homes, workplaces, schools and communities. It is also a occasion to consider our Sisters in Spirit, and the alarming rate of violence against Aboriginal women in Canada, as well as violence against women worldwide. To mark the 20th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre, OSSTF/FEESO has created a new bilingual poster that links our remembrance of the past with a commitment to action today. Copies are being distributed through the October issue of Update [PDF]. The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) has launched a new postcard campaign for the 20th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre. Called 20 Days/20 Ways, the CLC campaign features a package of 20 different postcards each focused on one issue of women's economic and social well-being and safety. One card is to be signed and mailed to the Prime Minister every day from November 16th until December 6th. The postcards, which are available in both English and French, can also be sent electronically by going to the Canadian Labour Congress website (see link below) during the campaign from November 16 to December 6. |
