OFL-CLC Pension Summit
A one-day Pension Summit scheduled for March 27th at the Park Hyatt Hotel The CLC Pension Reform Campaign continues. Currently there are four proposals (options) which are being researched federally to determine their suitability to provide a pan-Canadian solution for retirement security. The CLC proposal has thus far received endorsement from Nova Scotia. The successful option must be endorsed by 2/3 of the provinces which represent 2/3 of the population. The criteria means that the province of Ontario has veto power. As a result, Ontario will be targeted in the next few months.
Important meetings regarding the options are scheduled in May in either Windsor or PEI and also at the next Finance Minister's Conference in June.
The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL), in co-operation with the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), is holding a one-day Pension Summit scheduled for March 27th at the Park Hyatt Hotel 4 Avenue Road, in Toronto.
High Profile speakers will discuss the causes of the pension crisis and failures of the current pension system. You will hear a debate about solutions for the pension system. Invitations to the Pension Summit have been forwarded to David Dodge, Dwight Duncan and Dalton McGuinty. It is hoped that many attend and that robust discussion takes place to raise the awareness of politicians (Municipal, Provincial and Federal).
This will be a turning point in Canada's great pension debate and gives the audience an opportunity to present ideas, ask questions and provide input to the individuals that will be influencing the future of Canada's retirement security system. This could be the "medicare moment" for our generation. OSSTF/FEESO will be sending a number of representatives to this Pension Summit and officially report the highlights of the discussions.
The registration cost of the one day Pension Summit is $125 (registration fee is waived for retirees); registration will be required since space is limited. The summit will start at 9:00am and will likely finish around 3:30pm.
This is an opportunity for you to become informed on the national pension issues that all Canadians are now facing, and the proposed reforms that are designed to alleviate the shortcomings of the current Canadian retirement security system.
