Labour Fight in Wisconsin
Teachers and Public Workers Under Attack Tens of thousands jamming the streets with their urgent calls for justice… the main capitol building occupied for days… opposition lawmakers fleeing to evade a police roundup… a political strongman defiantly pushing through new powers for his government… No this isn't a story about something happening far away in the Middle East - it has taking place in Wisconsin in the heart of America. The extraordinary drama was ignited by Governor Scott Walker's attempt to impose legislation that would strip bargaining rights from almost all public employees in the state, as well as rolling back their pensions and benefits.
He is one of a number of newly elected Republican State Governors who are pursuing radical policies targeting public employees and, in many cases, unions in the private sector as well. It's the Tea Party Revolution being rolled out with a vengeance, and all eyes south of the border are fixated on the historic events as they unfold.
The image on all fourteen Democratic State Senators fleeing Wisconsin so that the State Troopers could not forcibly return them to the capitol building for the vote is extraordinary! When was the last time anything like that happened in North America? And not a word in the Toronto media about this entire drama…
